A good restoration plan begins with restraint. Before cleaning, polishing, replacing hardware or touching wiring, decide whether the goal is preservation, dependable home play, cosmetic display or a complete rebuild. Those goals can lead to different choices.
Document first
Photograph the front and rear, labels, screw positions, linkages, wire routing, trays and detached parts. Work from photographs and notes rather than memory. Bag and label hardware by assembly.
Separate four kinds of work

Preserve evidence
Old labels, odd fasteners and discoloration may look like clutter, but they can help identify the machine or show how it was originally assembled. Do not discard a part just because you have a prettier replacement.
Know when to stop
A machine does not need to look new to be a satisfying collectible. Stable original surfaces can be more interesting than bright refinishing. If a playfield graphic is fragile, or if the power system contains unknown modifications, pause and get specialist advice.
